Message from the Webmaster (Summer 1998)

As promised I have managed to find the time to sit down and to keep you informed of the progress of the FireNet Pages. And a lot has happened in the past 6 months since the last newsletter.

The Move

The move was made from the Web space ~colins at the beginning of May, as an ISP notified me that he had a domain name of fire.org.uk and wondered if I would be interested in having the name. I of course jumped at the chance as this would be a great boost for the future goal of a hosted server with my ISP. I approached my ISP and asked if he would be kind enough to help me out with the domain name and he agreed to register it on his server and also doubled my web space.
This has also given the site a higher profile and has increased in use from 1500 hits per day to 4500 hits per day over the period of 4 weeks for the FireNet Site.

Site Expansion

I have been asked by a number of people if I would be interested in hosting some pages for their Brigade/Organisation and after looking at the situation I have decided to go for it, with the first site going online in the next couple of weeks.
The cost for this service is one pound per day (365 pounds per year) which is payable in advance, for this you would get a Guestbook, Search Engine, Domain Name (www.fire.org.uk/YOURNAME/), Site Counter, an Email address and both initial and ongoing Page design. The page design will depend on what the user wants but typically will consist of a home page, logo, organisation description, local projects etc. The Web space available at present will be 1MB however rest assured that you can get a lot into 1MB and no one will loose out on space.
I have been undertaking this method of Web Page design for the ARFFWG for the past two years and the Page Editor sends me an Email to notify me of Additions, Deletions or Modifications, which I then amend as required. If you or your Brigade/Organisation are interested in putting your pages on this site then please drop me a line at colin@fire.org.uk

Experience Required

I have included a new member onto the FireNet team, he is Fire Fighter Jim who looks after the Kids Corner, he is the guide for the younger members of the community to help them look after their own and each others fire safety. Check out his Home Page.

I am also looking for individuals who would like to assist with areas that I do not have enough time or experience in (Training, Operational Procedures, Smoke/Vent Calculations, Brigade Welfare etc.) if you feel that you would like to assist in making the FireNet Pages even more informative then drop me a line at colin@fire.org.uk

Keep a Look Out

If you come across any UK Fire Site that is not listed on the National Link then please drop me a line so that it can be added. I would like to put this on an automated script but I do want to keep the links to the UK and elsewhere separate. I will have to keep an eye on this

I am off on holiday from the 12th July to the 26th July and as the wife wont let me take a lap top I am afraid that there is going to be a period of no Site supervision, the first thing I shall do on my return is to check my Email so I will reply to any outstanding items then.

Again I must say a BIG thank you to all of you out there that follow the development of the FireNet Pages and its your views that influence its future.

Many Thanks

Colin Simpson
