Fire at Appin prompts evacuation and exclusion zone

  • 2-7-2016

An early-morning fire at a village in northern Argyll resulted in 16 homes being evacuated and a 200m exclusion zone being put in place.

The blaze, at a garage on Tyneribbie, in Appin, near the A898, was reported at about 05:00.

Homes were evacuated as a precaution while crews ensured the safety of acetylene cylinders in the building.

Local residents were able to return to their homes once the fire was brought under control.

'Challenging incident'

Group manager Steph McGrath, the incident commander, said: "The scale of the fire and the presence of acetylene cylinders made this a challenging incident and our crews worked well to bring it to a safe conclusion.

"They fought the fire with hand-held jets and one fixed in position on the ground.

"A thermal imaging camera was also used to monitor the temperature of the cylinders throughout the firefighting operation."

An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.
