Happy Cabs fire: Man suffers Stapleford taxi firm burns

  • 1-25-2016

A man was taken to hospital with burns following a fire that destroyed the office of a Nottinghamshire taxi firm.

The fire broke out at Happy Cabs in Stapleford at about 22:45 GMT on Saturday.

Two adults and three children who escaped from the flat above into a garden then had to rescued by fire fighters as their exit was blocked by the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Watch manager Ray Burton said: "When we got there, there were flames shooting out across the road.

"It's now unusual to get a fire that's so developed because of early warning systems and smoke alarms.

"It was chaos at first because people were coming up to us telling us there were people here and there."

He said the man taken to hospital was a taxi driver who had been looking after the office at the time.

"He was walking and talking - he had just got burns on his legs and hands," said Mr Burton.

Mr Burton heard smoke alarms coming from the flat above the office and believes these saved the lives of the people in the flat.

"Smoke alarms are very important and undoubtedly saved the lives of the people upstairs," he said.
