Woman rescued from care home fire in Barking

  • 11-16-2015

An unconscious woman has been rescued after a fire tore through the ground floor of an east London care home.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus saved the 43-year-old woman from the property on Beccles Drive in Barking just after 01:00 GMT on Friday.

She was rushed to hospital where she remains in a critical condition. Six other residents and two carers were evacuated and rehoused elsewhere.

Police are treating the fire as suspected arson.

Two fire engines attended the fire, which damaged part of the ground floor, but was under control by 02:00 GMT, London Fire Brigade said.

The woman's next of kin have been informed and no other injuries were reported.

Beccles Drive remains partially blocked between junctions with Upney Lane and Westrow Drive while emergency services investigate, causing disruption to motorists.
