  • 11-13-2015

A man who dragged an injured biker out of a burning crash and a woman who pulled a neighbour clear from a house explosion have received bravery awards.

Peter Senior, from Burnopfield, and Caroline Tennant, from Consett, were honoured for their "selfless actions" by County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service.

Chief fire officer Stuart Errington said it is a "special person" who can run towards danger in a bid to help.

He said their actions saved lives.

Father-of-six Mr Senior rescued a biker who was trapped under a burning car following a crash on the A167 near Spennymoor on 12 August.

Mr Senior, who had been sitting in a coffee shop next to the road, pulled the seriously-injured biker from the blaze and then helped the driver of the car move away from the scene.

The biker suffered serious injuries but the fire service said he "ensured the best possible outcome".

Ms Tennant was decorating at her home in Oakdale Road on 22 September when she heard cries for help from her neighbour's home.

She saw the woman lying on the floor outside the burning building and pulled her clear seconds before an explosion shattered glass and debris over where the she had just been lying.
