Spelthorne council leader Robert Watts dies in fire

  • 10-9-2015

The leader of Spelthorne Borough Council, Robert Watts, has died in a fire at his home in Surrey.

Fire crews from four stations were sent to Bruce Avenue, in Shepperton, at about 00:30 BST after the blaze broke out in the kitchen of the bungalow.

Mr Watts, 64, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Council chief executive, Roberto Tambini, said everyone was "terribly shocked" and the borough would be "all the poorer without him".

"Robert had a passion for politics and an unfaltering desire to improve the lives of residents," he added.

'Worked hard'

Fellow Shepperton Town ward councillor, Robin Sider, added that his "untimely death will leave a large void in our ward".

"He lived to work hard for the community and will be sadly missed by all," he said.

Mr Watts, who was not married, was elected to the council in May 2011 and given Cabinet responsibility for the environment.

He oversaw a number of projects including the introduction of food waste collections before taking up the post of council leader in February 2013.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said an investigation was under way into the cause of the fire.
