Major fire in Macduff flats leaves man dead

  • 9-12-2015

A man in his early 20s has died and five other people were treated for smoke inhalation following a major fire in Macduff.

Emergency crews were called to the block of flats in the Aberdeenshire town's Newtown Drive shortly after midnight.

It took 29 firefighters nearly four hours to tackle the flames.

The five people suffering from the effects of breathing in smoke were treated at the scene.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

One resident was rescued from a top-floor flat using a ladder.

'Totally destroyed'

Group manager David Meldrum, from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, said it was a major operation.

He told BBC Scotland: "It would have been a great shock for the people within the building, but the crews quickly gained control and led the people to safety.

"The flat where the fire started has been totally destroyed, the fire quickly reached up into the roof space and the roof collapsed into the flat."

'Really fierce'

One eye-witness told BBC Scotland: "We saw the smoke and flames, it was a really fierce fire.

"They really were fighting to get it under control.

"It was quite horrendous. It's such a shame."
