Wimbledon Tennis Club grounds evacuated after fire alarm

  • 7-2-2015

Wimbledon's Tennis Club grounds have been evacuated following a fire alarm.

Security staff conducted a swift evacuation, initially of Centre Court, then the whole grounds, after the close of play on Wednesday evening.

Fire engines attended the scene but there was no obvious indication of a fire.

A Wimbledon spokesman said: "The cause of the evacuation was not immediately clear, amid suggestions it may have been caused by an electrical fault."

Centre Court was evacuated initially, with an announcement ordering anyone remaining inside the building to leave immediately.

A further announcement followed, requesting anyone on the tea lawn between gates four and five to evacuate.

Minutes later, everyone within the All England Club grounds was ordered to leave.

An earlier incident on Court One was a drill, tournament officials said.

Staff, including ball boys and ball girls, waited outside the gates as for further details of the more recent alarm.

Media were allowed to stay in the grounds, in the confines of the press centre, adjacent to Centre Court.
