Deliberate fire causes £700,000 damage to Tesco store in Glasgow

  • 8-30-2014

Police are investigating a deliberate fire that caused more than £700,000 of damage to a Tesco store in Glasgow.

The fire started after rubbish that was piled against a fence between Old Shettleston Road and Cockenzie Street, in Shettleston, was set alight.

The blaze took hold at about 13;15 on Wednesday and spread to the rear of the Tesco store causing an explosion in the electrical units.

No-one was hurt but some nearby homes were hit by a power blackout.

Det Sgt Colin MacRitchie, of Police Scotland, said: "Not only was the setting of this fire irresponsible, it was also very dangerous and could have caused serious injury.

Power blackout

"Thankfully, on this occasion, no one was hurt, however, a number of homes in the area were without power for two hours as a result of this reckless act.

"The cost of the damage to Tesco runs into hundreds of thousands of pounds as there was substantial damage within the compound, to the electrical units and to stock."

Det Sgt MacRitchie added: "Our inquiries so far have established that there were a number of children, pupils from a nearby school, in the lane at the time as it was during their lunch break.

"It is possible they may have seen someone setting the fire or acting suspiciously in the area so I would appeal to them to contact police with information that may help us without enquiries.

"The path between Old Shettleston Road and Cockenzie Street is used as a short cut by local people heading to and from Greenfields and is overlooked by a number of residential properties.

"Again, I would ask that those who use the short cut or overlook the path to contact police."
