Tamworth plastics factory fire tackled by 30 firefighters

  • 11-21-2013

A fire has broken out at a plastics factory in Tamworth, Staffordshire.

Flames were seen coming from the Lichfield Road Industrial Estate at about 16:20 GMT. At its height, about 30 firefighters tackled the blaze.

Staffordshire fire and Rescue said crews were still at the scene, but operations had been scaled back.

London Midland said some of its services to Tamworth station had been cancelled or delayed because the fire was "close" to the railway track.

Buses were brought in to operate between Tamworth and Nuneaton, as well as between Rugeley Trent Valley and Stafford.

The fire also led to long delays around Birmingham New Street, as trains were diverted there to avoid the fire.

Witnesses reported seeing large plumes of black smoke from up to 10 miles away.

Les Armstrong from Armstrong's Blacksmiths, which is based on the industrial estate, said no other businesses seemed to be in any danger.

"The flames are as high as the factory roof and the smoke is thick and black but it seems like the fire is being contained," he said.

He said traffic was "moving normally" around the site.

Police have also been at the scene and advised people in the area to keep doors and windows closed.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said no casualties had been reported.
