Lawrence Skip Hire, Kidderminster forced to axes jobs after fires

  • 9-12-2013

A recycling firm, hit by two major fires in six months, has gone into administration with 24 jobs axed.

The running of Lawrence's Skip Hire Limited in Kidderminster has been taken over by administrators KPMG.

Part of its factory had to be demolished in July after they were damaged by a fire that burned for seven weeks.

KPMG said the firm had ceased trading but eight workers were still at the site, which has been put on the market.

Up to 80 firefighters fought the fire at the plant after it broke out on 17 June.

It was the second major fire at the plant following a blaze, which burned for several days in December 2012.

Investigators said the latest fire had been caused by spontaneous combustion.

The demolition and clean-up operation at the site cost £250,000.

Worcestershire County Council and the Environment Agency helped meet the costs because the firm said it could not pay the whole amount.

In a statement, KPMG said 24 workers had been made redundant and eight employees were helping administrators in the short term.

The company has been unavailable for comment.
