West Molesey house fire 'and explosion' victim injured

  • 9-7-2013

A man has been taken to hospital after a fire and a suspected explosion virtually destroyed a house in Surrey.

Neighbours reported hearing a "huge boom" as flames were spotted "30ft into the air", in West Molesey.

Emergency crews were called to a small row of terraced houses in Spurfield, at about 13:30 BST.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said the house had all but been destroyed, but all occupants had been accounted for.

Roads and footpaths in the immediate area had been closed including including Spurfield, Hurst Road, Dunstall Way, Balmoral Crescent, Kelvin Brook, Park Way and Ferry Road, Surrey Police confirmed.

Crews from eight fire engines had tackled the blaze, which also spread to adjacent properties and a car parked outside, a spokeswoman said.

Matt Sullivan, from the service, said it had been "a reasonably serious incident", initially starting on the ground floor in a vehicle before it extended into the roof and adjacent properties.

An investigation into the cause has begun.

The man, in his 40s, was taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

Gas and electricity engineers have also been on the scene isolating supplies to the property.
