Pony killed in Ogwell barn 'arson'

  • 8-30-2013

A barn fire which killed a pony is believed to have been started deliberately, the fire service says.

The blaze ripped through the 30m by 50m (100ft by 165ft) structure in Ogwell, Newton Abbot, causing more than £200,000 worth of damage.

Fire crews were alerted at 22:30 BST on Thursday and remained at the scene well into Friday afternoon.

Four other ponies were rescued by the farmer. Up to 500 tonnes of hay, straw and farm machinery was destroyed.

Paul Gammin, the owner of Rydon Farm, said: "There was nothing we could do. It's pretty devastating at the moment. It's worrying and really upsetting for the family.

"There's in excess of £200,000 worth of damage but we will rebuild and carry on. It's going to take months to put this right."

Matt Johnson, from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The fire was visible from many miles around."

The service added it was "believed to be deliberate ignition".

Five fire appliances, a water carrier and an incident command unit were sent to the timber and steel structure which was used partly as stables and partly for hay storage.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the barn was part of an equestrian livery yard which housed about 35 animals.
