Fire breaks out at new Southern General Hospital in Glasgow

  • 6-11-2013

Firefighters have put out a blaze at the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said a call had been received shortly after 13:00 on Monday.

The fire broke out on the second floor of the new hospital building which is under construction within the grounds of the existing Southern General.

Four crews from Govan, Knightswood and Renfrew attended the scene before the fire was extinguished at about 13:45.

Major construction work is taking place on the site as part of £842m plans to transform it into an integrated children's and adult hospital campus.

A fire service spokesman added: "The fire was at the building site of the new Southern General Hospital, not the existing hospital.

"It started in the second-floor plant room. Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus put the fire out."

No casualties were reported and an investigation will be carried out to determine the cause of the blaze.
