Cardiff-Newport rail lines reopen after chemical spill

  • 11-1-2012

Train lines between Cardiff and Newport have reopened after services were stopped following a chemical incident near tracks at Rumney.

British Transport Police said a gas container at the Wentloog Freightliner Depot overfilled with ethanol, and there were fears it could explode.

The depot was cordoned off and passengers were warned of "extensive delays" with rail services suspended.

First Great Western (FGW) says lines have been now reopened.

Following the incident, FGW said the lines were closed at the request of the fire service.

Trains that left Cardiff or Newport were returned to their stations.

Passengers travelling from Cardiff to London Paddington were transferred to Bristol Parkway by bus.

Local roads in the Rumney area of Cardiff were also affected.

Shortly after the incident, a British Transport Police (BTP) spokesperson said: "Officers from British Transport Police and South Wales Police are currently assisting colleagues from the fire service after receiving a report at 16.57 GMT of an incident at Wentloog Freightliner Depot in Newlands Road, Rumney, Cardiff.

"A gas container at the depot was overfilled with ethanol, and there are concerns this may lead to the container exploding.

"A cordon has been put in place around the depot and the railway line between Cardiff and Newport has been suspended.

"Trains in the surrounding area are therefore likely to be subjected to extensive delays."

BTP advised passengers to check National Rail Enquiries or call them on 08457 48 4950 for the latest travel advice.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service still had teams at the site at 19:38 GMT on Thursday, but said the incident had been scaled down and all materials had been contained.
