Marden train evacuated after wheel bearings catch fire

  • 9-5-2012

Passengers had to be evacuated from four carriages after the wheels of a train caught fire in Kent.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters were called to Marden Station at 17:56 BST.

Four fire crews used dry powder and a hose reel to put out the fire, caused when rubber wheel bearings on the first carriage caught alight.

The fire was brought under control by 18:26 BST. Southeastern said the train was blocking London-bound lines.

Some London-bound services were running from Ashford while some were terminating at Tonbridge.

A replacement bus service was in place between Tonbridge and Ashford International in both directions.
