Southend workers rescued from cage 50ft above ground

  • 7-3-2012

Workers putting up posters at a university building in Southend were rescued after becoming trapped 50ft (15m) above the ground in a crane cage.

The workers were stuck for an hour-and-a-half before the alarm was raised at 20:50 BST on Monday.

The three men were working at the fourth floor level of the University of Essex campus, in Elmer Approach, when the crane developed a mechanical fault.

Fire crews used an aerial ladder platform in the rescue.

'Cold and wet'

Two of the men were brought down using the ladder platform. The third came down in the crane after it was restarted successfully.

The men were described as "cold and wet but unhurt" by the fire service, who were called by security staff.

A university spokeswoman said the three men were sub-contractors brought in to put up five new promotional banners.
