  • 4-30-2012

An East Lothian pensioner has been taken to hospital after sacks of coal in her living room were ignited by a spark from her fireplace.

An 89-year-old woman, from Ormiston, was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary after the blaze broke out at 04:09.

Firefighters were called to her two-floor semi-detached house in Cockburn drive, and the fire was brought under control by about 05:30.

The woman was alerted to the fire by her smoke alarms going off.

She rescued by firefighters from the house and given oxygen at the scene before being taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said: "The coal fire ignited bags of coal which were by the fireplace.

"The occupier was alerted by a smoke alarm."
