Vote over South Yorkshire fire service budget cuts
- 3-26-2012
A meeting of the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority in Barnsley later will vote on plans to cut £10m from its budget over four years.
The fire service plans to close stations in Darnall, Mansfield Road and Mosborough in Sheffield and Royston near Barnsley.
Two new stations are planned near the Sheffield Parkway and Birley.
Firefighters in South Yorkshire have launched a national campaign to prevent cuts to the service.
The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has placed an advert in a tabloid newspaper to highlight "the severity of the cuts" in the county.
John Gilliver, from the FBU, said the proposed cuts were "life-threatening".
In a statement, the fire authority said: "We don't want to make these changes but have already received a government cut of £4.7m, and have been told the cut for 2013-15 will be even higher.
"We have therefore proposed changes which we believe will reduce our spending with the minimum impact on public safety."
The meeting will start in Barnsley at 10:00 BST.
