Warning to avoid Oxfordshire's frozen ponds and lakes

Firefighters have warned people to stay away from frozen ponds and lakes.

The plea comes from Oxfordshire County Council's Fire and Rescue Service after after seven people and four dogs had to be rescued last winter.

Stuart Garner from the service said: "The ice can be very thin and the sub-zero water temperature can quickly incapacitate most people."

The Met Office has a severe weather warning for widespread snow and ice in place until Sunday.

Oxford City Council said it was ready for the possible winter weather over the weekend.

Principal roads had been salted and two four-wheel vehicles with ploughs and one tractor with a plough were on stand-by, it said.
