Ashford men escape arson attack on house

  • 1-22-2012

Two men, one in his 30s and one in his 70s, escaped uninjured after an arson attack on their home in Surrey.

Police said the fire, just after 02:00 GMT on Saturday, caused extensive damage to the property in Ashford.

The younger man was awoken by a noise outside the house in Metcalf Road as the front door was set alight and both occupants fled by the back door.

Detectives want to trace a dark-coloured estate car seen in the Metcalf Road area at the time of the incident.

'Serious consequences'

Two houses next to the damaged property were evacuated for a short time and police cordoned off Metcalf Road near the junction with Feltham Hill Road for several hours.

Det Con Brett Harris said the arson could have had serious consequences.

"This was a very frightening experience which has left both men very shaken," he said.

"I would like to hear from members of the public who saw anyone acting suspiciously in or around Metcalf Road and Feltham Hill Road in the hours leading up to the incident.

"I am particularly keen to hear from anyone with any information about the estate vehicle seen in the Metcalf Road area."
