A woman and her baby were rescued from a burning building in Oxford after becoming trapped in a first-floor bedroom.

The woman handed her child to a neighbour out of the window of her bedroom in Bulan Road, Headington, during the fire on Wednesday evening.

She was then rescued by firefighters using a ladder.

On arrival, firefighters found people escaping from the windows of the smoke-filled seven-bedroom house.

Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service said three crews attended the scene after the fire was reported at 20:45 GMT.

Smoke inhalation

Having rescued the woman in her 30s from her bedroom, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished a fire in the hallway using high pressure hose reel water jets.

The crews searched of the property to check there was nobody else inside.

Four residents including two infants were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation after the fire.

Station Manager Gary D'Anger said: "The occupants of this property were extremely lucky to escape without serious injury."
