Tamworth Mercia community fire station opens

  • 11-30-2011

A community fire station, built using money from the Private Finance Initiative, has opened.

Seventeen retained firefighters are based at Tamworth Mercia Community Fire Station in Staffordshire.

The new building houses one appliance and has a room which is designated for community use.

Tamworth Mercia is the last of the 10 new community fire stations built under a Private Finance Initiative project to open in the county.

'Welcoming feel'

Del Roberts, area commander for Tamworth, said: "We're really pleased with the new station; it couldn't be more different to the former station.

"The building has a welcoming feel and because firefighters have had an input into the design the layout is much more workable.

"The facilities for both the firefighters and the community really are second to none."

The consortium delivering the project is called Fire Support, construction company Stepnell built the station and Cofely Ltd will provide the ongoing facilities management.
