Large blaze in central Glasgow close to Kingston Bridge

  • 11-28-2011

About 80 firefighters are tackling a large blaze near the south bank of the River Clyde in Glasgow which has seen neighbouring buildings evacuated.

Fire crews were called to the former Co-operative Funeral Service building, at 120 Morrison Street, at about 13:50.

A total of 16 appliances are now tackling the blaze.

There are no reports of any casualties. Morrison Street is closed to traffic. Smoke has affected the nearby M8 and M74 motorways.

As of 15:15 there was no access to Paisley Road eastbound at Seaward Street.

Traffic was being diverted via Seaward Street, Scotland Street and West Street.

Traffic heading westbound is being diverted via Wallace Street and Carnoustie Street.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said crews were mobilised from Polmadie and Govan fire stations.

When firefighters arrived they found smoke coming from the first and third floors of the five-storey building.

Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the building while efforts began to contain the blaze.

The fire service said neighbouring buildings had been evacuated and heavy smoke was also affecting the Kingston Bridge.
