Smaller fire engines for Cornwall's rural areas

  • 11-22-2011

Cornwall is to get a fleet of smaller fire engines which will make it easier to reach isolated rural locations.

The appliances are 18 inches narrower than a standard engine and will cost about £125k - half the normal price.

They will have a crew of five and the first is expected to arrive in January.

Bodmin Station fire manager Richard Gibbons said: "It's able to get to a lot of the difficult places, mainly the smaller rural roads and fishing villages around our coastline."

The engine likely to be based at Fowey in south Cornwall.

Mr Gibbons said the new machines were part of the fire and rescue service's vehicle replacement programme.

It will carry five firefighters and it is almost as fully equipped as the major appliances," he added.
