Alarm warning after mother and son die in Babell fire

  • 11-22-2011

Firefighters have warned of the dangers of not having smoke alarms, after a mother and son died in a house fire.

The bodies of Margaret Hughes, 80, and Paul Hughes, 42, were found at Gors Farm in Babell, Flintshire on Friday.

John Gittins, acting coroner for north east Wales, opened and adjourned inquests. Provisional cause of deaths was inhalation of smoke and fire gases.

Meanwhile, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service has said there were no smoke alarms at the property.

The cause of the blaze, which was reported in the early hours of 18 November, has not yet been identified.

Senior fire safety manager, Gareth Griffiths, said: "There is no doubt that smoke alarms save lives and time and time again we can demonstrate how lucky people are to escape a fire as they had a working smoke detector.

"But sadly, on this occasion it is a tragedy that this property was not fitted with a smoke alarm as this could have helped to save the lives of the occupants.

"Smoke alarms act effectively as an early warning signal, providing a crucial opportunity to evacuate a property - I cannot stress strongly enough how important it is to fit and maintain working smoke alarms in your home.

"As well as providing free smoke alarms, a free home fire safety check from the fire and rescue service includes basic advice on how to avoid a fire in the home."
