Newport city centre flats damaged by fire

An investigation has begun into a fire which badly damaged flats above an empty shop in Newport city centre.

The blaze broke out above the former Money Shop in Commercial Street at about 02:27 BST on Saturday.

Crews from 11 fire stations across south Wales attended the incident which affected the first and second floors and roof of the three-storey building.

All residents were accounted for and no-one needed rescuing or treatment. The all-clear was given at 05:25 BST.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the building was well alight when they arrived at the scene.

Crews from Maindee, Malpas, Duffryn, Cwmbran, New Inn, Cefn Forest, Risca, Roath, Cardiff, Caerphilly and Abercarn were called out to tackle the fire.

They used three jets, two breathing apparatus, a hydraulic platform used as a water tower, thermal imaging cameras and safety jets.

The building has been cordoned off as fire officers investigate the incident with Gwent Police.
