An elderly man has died in a fire at his Dundee home in the early hours of the morning.

Firefighters said they had found the man in the first-floor bedroom of the house at Mains Loan, Maryfield.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene, but had already succumbed to the effects of the blaze, Tayside Fire and Rescue said.

An investigation is being carried out with police into the cause of the fire, which started on the ground floor.

The fire service said they were called to the scene shortly after 0415 BST, with the first appliance arriving within four minutes.

Two other appliances and 20 firefighters were involved in the incident.

'No smoke alarm'

A spokeswoman for the fire service said: "Upon arrival firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the house and extinguished the fire on the ground floor whilst simultaneously searching the property.

"During this search fire crews located an elderly male in a first floor bedroom and removed him from the building and passed him to paramedics at the scene.

"Tragically the elderly man had succumbed to the effects of the fire."

The blaze was contained within the house, which is not thought to have had a smoke alarm fitted.

The spokeswoman said that the fire had produced "substantial amounts of smoke" that had spread throughout the man's home.

Tayside Police said there were no apparent suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire.
