Reptiles rescued from a fire at flats in Blackpool

  • 7-1-2011

Firefighters rescued a collection of reptiles as they searched a three storey terraced house in Blackpool which was found alight.

No-one was in the property on Palatine Road, which is used as student accommodation, when the fire was reported at 0300 BST.

Lancashire crews evacuated people from a neighbouring property as a precaution as smoke had spread into the roof area.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

"Officers found what they described as a significant fire which had been under way for about three hours," duty officer Ian Garrod said.

"The crews initially did not know if there were people still in the building, and because of the construction of the building and the length of time the fire had been burning, it had gone through all the floors and the priority then became stopping the fire crossing over into the neighbouring properties."

He added that officers had found some reptiles as they searched the property.

"There was a bearded dragon lizard and two rare oriental toads survived the fire, we salvaged a tank to put them in and the owner has taken them away," he said.
