Man and dog rescued from New Forest pub fire

  • 7-1-2011

A man and his dog were rescued after a fire ripped through a pub in the New Forest during the early hours.

About 30 firefighters tackled the blaze at the Tollhouse Inn, on Southampton Road, Lymington, which broke out in the ground floor at about 0415 BST.

Fire crews used a ladder to rescue the man and his dog from a first floor bedroom window.

The cause is not yet known and a joint investigation has been launched by police and the fire service.

The ground floor of the detached building was damaged by fire and smoke.

Fire officer Nick Davies, who led the operation, said: "On arrival, the initial crews were faced with a very difficult fire in a large building.

"If it wasn't for their quick arrival, the male and his dog may have become trapped in the building and the outcome could have been devastating.

"I am very proud of the crews as they all worked so hard."
