Fire checks offered for thatched buildings in Cornwall

Owners and occupants of thatched properties in Cornwall are being offered free fire safety checks by the county's fire service.

Andy Barrett, from the fire service, said there had been "a number" of thatch fires over the last month.

He said when such fires took hold, the damage could be devastating.

The service said the checks would help ensure the risk of fire in the distinctive and often historic buildings would be kept to a minimum.

One of the most high-profile recent thatch fires in the county was the burning down of the Pandora Inn in Mylor in March.

The 13th Century inn, on the River Fal, was destroyed in a blaze thought to have started in a chimney and which then spread to the roof

The roof then collapsed into the building.
