Fire at Moorgate Crossrail building site
- 1-31-2011
Firefighters in central London have put out a fire which started at a site due to be demolished as part of the Crossrail scheme.
They were called to 91-103 Moorgate at 1510 GMT and 31 construction workers were evacuated.
A water cooler on the roof was damaged by the flames, the fire service said.
The site was to be knocked down to make way for the Moorgate entrance of the new Liverpool Street station, a Crossrail spokesman said.
The company is investigating the cause of the fire, he added.
The £16bn project will run through central London and will connect Berkshire with Essex.
The A501 Moorgate was closed to traffic while the fire was tackled but has now reopened.
