Battersea body find explosion treated as suspicious

  • 11-15-2010

_49986656_fire.jpgAn explosion and fire at a block of flats in south London where a man's body was found are being treated by police as suspicious.

The building in Crichton Street, Battersea, partially collapsed after the blast early on Saturday.

A man's body was found in the loft conversion of a flat that was completely destroyed.

The Metropolitan Police said the incident was being investigated by the homicide and serious crime command.

Residents described being woken by two large explosions. They alerted the emergency services at about 0315 GMT.

A London Fire Brigade spokeswoman said the building had been declared structurally unsafe and investigations to determine the cause of both the explosion and the fire were continuing.

People living in four other flats in Dunnington Tower were moved to safety and have been staying with friends and relatives.

A post-mortem examination on the victim was due to be carried out on Monday.
