Stephen Burn, 26, from Witton Gilbert, was last seen at Durham Rowing Club on 28 August.

Durham Police said he left the wedding reception after a row with his girlfriend and had not been seen since.

His body was spotted in the river by a man in a kayak on Sunday morning and later identified by a member of Mr Burn's family.

A police spokesman said officers and the fire service helped recover the body which was about 200m from the rowing club on the Gilesgate side of the river.

A post-mortem examination is due to be held later.
