A 28-year-old man has been arrested following a suspected arson attack at a hotel in Folkestone.

Kent Police said it was treating the fires at Windsor Hotel in Langhorne Gardens on Monday as "suspicious".

Two rooms on the second floor of the building were destroyed after two separate blazes broke out at the four-storey building at about 2130 BST.

One man was rescued from the basement and taken to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford "as a precaution".

'No guests'

About 15 firefighters took about 90 minutes to douse the flames which badly damaged two rooms and caused light smoke damage to the second and third floors.

A spokesman for Kent Police said: "A 28-year-old man was arrested late last night in connection with the incident and is currently in custody at Folkestone Police Station.

"KFRS [Kent Fire and Rescue Service] rescued a man from the basement of the hotel who was taken to the William Harvey Hospital as a precaution, but police believe there were no guests staying in the hotel and no other people were harmed.

"Further inquiries are being made at the scene."
