'Engine fire' forces passenger plane back to Birmingham

  • 8-3-2010

A Monarch Airlines plane carrying more than 200 passengers has been forced to turn around after a suspected engine fire shortly after take-off.

The 1845 BST flight ZB932 from Birmingham to Tenerife landed at Birmingham International Airport at 1855 BST following engine trouble.

All 213 passengers disembarked safely.

Monarch said engineers had found indications of a fire, although Birmingham airport said there was no sign of a fire on landing.

Monarch said: "Shortly after take-off, a problem with the left-hand engine forced its shut down, and as a precautionary measure the flight diverted back to Birmingham.

"The aircraft landed safely at 18.55 and all passengers disembarked as normal."

The passengers were asked to wait in the terminal building while the airline arranged alternative transport.
