Man winched to safety from boat blaze off Dorset coast

  • 7-15-2010

A seafarer had to be winched to safety by a coastguard helicopter after his boat caught fire in a Dorset harbour.

Portland Coastguard were alerted at 1405 BST that the vessel was alight near Keysworth Point in Poole Harbour.

The 31-year-old man, who suffered smoke inhalation, ran the vessel aground on a mudbank and then abandoned it, a coastguard spokesman said.

He was later flown to Poole Hospital by helicopter. It is thought the boat caught fire due to an electrical fault.

Poole coastguard team and two RNLI lifeboats attended the incident.
