Car appeal follows Brighton Greek Orthodox Church blaze

  • 7-14-2010

Police investigating a suspicious fire at a church in Brighton want to trace the owner of a car seen near the building minutes before it began.

The blaze, on the afternoon of 4 July, gutted the interior of the Greek Orthodox Church in Carlton Hill and caused thousands of pounds of damage.

An area used as a children's classroom was destroyed, along with their work.

Officers want to trace the owner of a blue Renault Scenic seen near the church between 1420 BST and 1435 BST.

The fire was reported to the emergency services shortly afterwards.

Police said they want to eliminate the owner from their inquiries and asked anyone with information to come forward.

The church, which was formerly an Anglican place of worship, is a Grade II listed building.
