Plans to close two Warwickshire fire stations

  • 7-13-2010

At least two part-time fire stations in Warwickshire would close under plans to reorganise the service.

Brinklow and Warwick would shut under all three options being considered by the county council on 20 July.

Closing Studley is proposed in two of the options and Bidford would shut under one of them.

The Fire Brigades Union has said it would fight closure plans. Changes were not designed to cut costs but to improve services, the council has said.

'Resilient service'

Warwickshire's chief fire officer Graeme Smith said: "We need to strengthen our work on preventing all types of fires and emergencies.

"We also want to ensure that wholetime and on-call firefighters can work more closely together in order to share their knowledge and experiences.

"I hope that the public will see that I have listened and whilst not all decisions will be popular, I have adapted the improvement plan to offer a resilient service that prioritises our resources."

Earlier, Mark Rattray, from the union, said closing four stations would have a "devastating effect on local communities".

He said: "We can convince them it's the wrong move and to go back to the chiefs and have efficiency savings elsewhere."
