Hot weather increases bonfire incidents in Cornwall

  • 7-13-2010

Firefighters in Cornwall said they are attending an increased number of call-outs following the dry weather.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) said it had attended 16 incidents where bonfires had spread to sheds and properties in the first week of July.

The fire service said the warm weather had dried bonfire materials, making them burn more quickly.

CFRS advised people to place bonfires in an open area and not to burn highly flammable materials such as paint tins.

Esther O'Bearagh, from Cornwall Council, said: "Ideally householders should not have bonfires at all, but one of the best ways to reduce waste is to compost as much as possible at home."
