Fire breaks out in Kingston tower block

  • 7-12-2010

_48334969_photo.jpgAbout 100 firefighters are tackling a blaze at a block of flats in south-west London.

The top four floors of the 15-storey Madingley block in the Cambridge Estate in Kingston-upon-Thames are alight, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) has said.

The fire began at about 1645 BST and 20 fire engines are at the scene.

An LFB spokeswoman said it is "unlikely" that anyone had been trapped by the fire.

The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames said Madingley had 60 flats and all its residents - about 150 people - had left the block. It said no-one had been left inside.

A further four nearby blocks - which house about 250 people - have also been evacuated for safety reasons.

The residents forced to leave have been taken to nearby Piper community hall.

"We are assessing what people's needs will be," a council spokesman said.

"If it's the case that they won't be able to return to the block tonight we will assist anybody who hasn't got alternative accommodation."

Namrata Kulkarni, who lives nearby, said: "There was a lot of smoke and flames.

"It was frightening and really horrible to see. I just hope everyone is out."
