Toast off menu at maternity ward
- 7-7-2010
New mothers at a hospital in Glasgow are no longer being offered toast after giving birth because the toasters have been classed as a fire hazard.
Instead, staff at the Southern General Hospital are offering mothers a roll, cereal or biscuits after their labour.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said the change was made as toasters were setting off the fire alarms.
The new redeveloped Southern Maternity Unit is soon expected to see about 5,500 births annually.
A spokeswoman for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said: "Toasters are not permitted in certain clinical areas as they regularly set off hospital fire alarm systems which can cause a great deal of disruption for patients and staff.
"In addition to the disruption to patients and staff this also places a burden on Strathclyde Fire and Rescue as they attend when a hospital fire alarm is activated.
"New mums at the Southern General Maternity Unit are offered tea or coffee with either a roll, cereal or a biscuit depending on their preference."
