Fire crews tackle woodland blaze

  • 7-7-2010

Fire crews are battling a huge blaze on woodland, gorse and moorland on the outskirts of Inverness.

Highland Fire and Rescue said they had received hundreds of calls from the occupants of housing estates around the Tomfat Woods, south of the city.

A spokeswoman said the houses were not yet at risk but they were monitoring the situation.

Three pumping engines and ArgoCat all-terrain vehicle were being used to tackle the blaze.

BBC news website reporter Steven McKenzie said the fire above Milton of Leys was visible from all over Inverness.

He said: "It is really windy. The flames are rising 20ft in the air.

"We got to about a mile away and you can see the flames clearly."
