Explosive cylinders found in fire in Fleetwood

  • 7-7-2010

Fire crews have set up an exclusion zone in Lancashire after two potentially explosive gas cylinders were found in a burning building.

A 200m cordon was placed round the derelict property in Radcliffe Road, Fleetwood, at 1830 BST on Tuesday.

The acetylene cylinders had come into contact with a rubbish fire nearby.

Firefighters have been monitoring the situation overnight, but it can take 24 hours for the cylinders to cool down.

'Highly volatile'

Homes have not been evacuated, as they were just on the edge of the exclusion zone so were not deemed to be in great danger.

A Lancashire Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said the cordon had been pulled back slightly but road closures were still in place.

The A585 Amounderness Way was closed at the roundabout by the Nautical College to the roundabout by Asda supermarket and these closures are likely to remain until later, the spokeswoman added.

Acetylene is a highly volatile substance which, when it comes into contact with heat can develop a chemical reaction making it unstable and liable to explode.
