Passengers face disruptions after cable fire in Barking
- 7-6-2010
Passengers on the London Underground (LU) are facing disruption after a cable fire led to services being suspended in east London.
The fire at Barking station on Friday destroyed dozens of 50-year-old cables resulting in a power failure.
Services to Barking and Dagenham East have been suspended on the District, Hammersmith and City and Circle lines.
LU said engineers were working on the problem but warned that disruptions could last until Wednesday.
Replacement bus
LU said the fire was not believed to have been caused by a fault.
One theory is a cigarette may have started it after being thrown from a public footway.
Trains on the District Line are not operating between Plaistow and Dagenham East and there is no service on the Hammersmith and City and Circle lines between Whitechapel and Barking.
A replacement bus service is operating between Plaistow, Barking and Dagenham East.
The fire has also affected signals and traction on these lines.
Howard Collins, LU's chief operating officer, said: "Our engineers have been working around the clock to get as many services as possible back up and running, and we are now in a position where the majority of stations affected on Friday now have some service.
"There will be some disruption through the early part of this week, but we are doing everything we can to resume normal services as soon as possible."
