Environment team to monitor Wem fire site

  • 7-6-2010

A fire at a tyre firm on an industrial estate in Wem, Shropshire, that burned for almost 20 hours, is out.

About 50 firefighters were sent to tackle the fire at Kingpin Tyres on Sunday lunchtime. It is the third fire at the firm since April of last year.

Teams sent to monitor the air quality after clouds of black smoke billowed from the site have also left.

The Environment Agency said it would monitor the situation and hold talks with the owners about safety.

The fire took hold in a pile of rubber particles, the fire service said.

Martin Timmis, of Shropshire Fire and Rescue, said there had been a similar fire in September last year which took weeks to put out.

"The company has made the rubber stack significantly smaller since then which helped reduce the fire risk," he said.
