Fire crews tackle third Wem tyre firm blaze in a year

  • 7-5-2010

About 50 firefighters are tackling a fire at a tyre company on an industrial estate in Shropshire, in the third incident of its kind in a year.

Waste rubber from the tyres at Kingpin Tyres on the Wem industrial estate has been burning since about lunchtime, firefighters said.

The fire covers about 100m by 30m (328ft by 98ft) and has caused a dark cloud of smoke. The cause is not known.

It took crews severals days to extinguish a fire there in September.

More than 30 firefighters were called to that incident, which was described as "quite an extreme fire", after attending a smaller fire in April last year.

A spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters will remain at the scene throughout Sunday evening to tackle the fire.

Shropshire Council said smoke from the plant was not dangerous and people living in the area should not panic.
