Fears for Oak Tree Heath after two fires
- 6-30-2010
Two fires have damaged a Nottinghamshire nature reserve and led to a call for greater awareness from those using it.
Oak Tree Heath in Mansfield supports a distinctive range of wildlife.
But the recent fires, one of which was connected with fly-tipping, have destroyed part of the habitat.
Volunteers said this affected plants and animals and undermined efforts to improve the area. They asked visitors to be careful with fires and matches.
The heath is a remnant of much larger areas of open land within the forest of Sherwood.
Scientific interest
Barbara Belford, who helps maintain the site, said: "Volunteers from Mansfield and district give their heart and soul in making a difference by looking after this site.
"We were saddened to see the site, where lizards live and bask when the sun's out, damaged by fire. Birds' eggs were found among the burnt heathers.
"We ask that people think before they light a match and think about the volunteers and rangers who come out each week to look after Oak Tree's local heritage."
Mansfield District Council said it would prosecute anyone found dumping rubbish at the site.
Oak Tree Heath was designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1989 and as a Local Nature Reserve in 2004.
