Rescuers have retrieved 25 bodies from the Ganges river after an overloaded boat capsized, police in India's Uttar Pradesh state have said.
The boat, carrying about 60 people, capsized in Ballia district. Seventeen people swam to safety but others are still missing.
Police said the boat was ferrying double its capacity of 30 people to a temple near Ballia.
Boats in India are often overloaded, which leads to frequent incidents.
Most of the passengers on the boat were women and children, local police official Shivendra Yadav told the Associated Press news agency.
"As the boat entered the midstream, it failed to take the weight of the people and collapsed," Mr Yadav said.
