Two men have been helped to safety after a fire broke out at a house in Portadown.

Police officers on patrol noticed the blaze on the Armagh Road at 0300 BST on Sunday and forced entry to the property. They assisted a man to safety.

A second man at a nearby house was also helped out.

Both men were taken to hospital but their conditions are not believed to be serious.

PSNI area commander, Chief Inspector Jason Murphy, said: "The officers who attended this fire must be commended for their quick thinking and speedy actions.

"They observed the fire while on patrol and took immediate steps to determine if anyone was at risk and to help them.

"Their selfless actions helped save the lives of these men."

The fire is not being treated as suspicious.
